information for visitors with disabilities

In response to the Americans with Disabilities Act, every effort has been made to accommodate legislators, legislative staff and visiting constituents with special needs.

Wheelchair Access: The State House and State House Annex are equipped with wheelchair accessible elevators, restrooms and phones. Public galleries are not wheelchair accessible. On session days, sergeants-at-arms of both Houses may grant visitors using wheelchairs access to the chamber floors through the first floor main entrance. For tours, arrangements will be made for the floor of both legislative chambers to be available to visitors in wheelchairs.

Parking and Entrances: Handicapped parking spaces are available on the south side of West State Street between the State House and Thomas Edison State College, and in the adjacent parking garage.

Entrances to the State House and State House Annex are equipped with wheelchair accessible ramps and power assisted doors.

Visitors with Hearing Loss: The legislative chambers are equipped with built-in, ADA-compliant, FM assisted listening devices for persons with hearing loss. Headsets and receivers are available when requested 24 hours in advance. Specific arrangements can be made by calling:

Real time reporters and sign language interpreters are available with a minimum of five working-days notice by calling 609-847-3353.

Signage: Signage in the State House Annex and Pedestrian Tunnel connecting the State House to the Annex contains Braille and raised lettering.

Printed Materials: Large-print versions of bills, resolutions, and committee statements can be obtained from the Office of Legislative Services Legislative Information and Bill Room. Upon request, the office may produce several publications in large versions as well. The phone number is 609-847-3905, or toll free in NJ, 1-800-792-8630. Hearing Impaired: Dial 711 for NJ Relay.

Other items can be enlarged or made available in an audio format by request.

New Mothers: A Lactation Room is available for nursing mothers. It is located adjacent to the Women's bathroom on level 3 of the State House, Room L302.

Tours: The Tour Office strives to accommodate groups with disabilities. Please alert the Tour Office staff of your group’s special needs when you make your reservation.

Tours for visually impaired guests are approximately an hour and fifteen minutes and must be booked in advance. These tours are generally limited to 15 visitors and are suitable for all ages. For more information or to arrange a tour, kindly contact the State House Tour Office at 609-847-3150.
